I was becoming increasingly concerned with the government’s embarrassing attitude to climate change and especially fracking, and read a Get-Up article detailing Powershop’s entry to the NSW electricity market. Electricity is a significant business cost in running a large warehouse and offices, and I was staggered by the difference in unit cost between Powershop and my old provider. This is without taking into account the extra savings available online, the ease of use, and the excellent customer service.
I like the honesty of the way prices are presented (inclusive of GST and service fees), the way they reflect the market, the fact that I am making significant savings, and that my electricity is offset by the UN Certified Emission Reduction certificates. I hated my old provider pestering me to switch back by suddenly offering me discounts after years of loyalty – this is definitely not how we treat our customers!
We are now acquiring solar panels and LED lights with the money saved.
"I feel very strongly about the complete disregard the current government has for climate change. The financial support that it provides to the coal industry through tax breaks is corporate greed and cronyism at it's worst, without any concern for the future of the planet's biodiversity and the environmental legacy we are creating for our children. As a sun drenched continent in the midst of a massive brain drain, when our scientists are being forced overseas through lack of government funding, we should be investing heavily into research and development and leading the way in renewable energy in the global energy revolution. We should not be rewarding energy providers who are trying to quash renewable energy targets for the financial gain of the mining industry.
Like any major decision, my reasons for switching to a renewable energy provider are based on years of growth and experience; I grew up in a small town in the national park on the far north coast, so I have a very strong bond with nature, complimented by several years of studying an undergraduate degree in environmental science, I have become a passionate, educated, advocate for a broad spectrum of environmental causes. However, change is not always an easy thing to do, and I guess finally it was someone making it easy for me that initiated the switch. If I'd owned my own home, installing solar power would've been easy, there's infrastructure and services available to allow this to happen. But, being a renter it seems very hard to actually make these changes in your life. This is not helped by the complete apathy of pre-existing companies and the really high rates they charge, to have access to renewables, leaving many people without the impetus to change.
"To me value equates to having my investments align with my values and my approach to the everyday. As a Get Up core member I have followed and supported many campaigns. Last year Get Up promoted the Green Peace’s Green Electricity Guide where Powershop was rated highly based on set criteria. I have welcomed the recent roll out into NSW which has added value to the increasing community empowerment through access to fossil fuel information and tools for divestment action. I became a part of this collective social movement towards a cleaner energy system after having been a customer of both Origin and AGL over the last 7 years since moving out of home. I have now divested all my services - consolidated, closed and switched banks, electricity and superannuation accounts to become fossil-fuel investment free."
I've been concerned about my dirty energy usage for some years, however, changing energy providers seemed expensive and confusing. When I heard about the GetUp campaign I looked into the pricing and was surprised to know it was competitive. I trusted GetUp had done their homework and Powershop was a legitimately green energy company.
Since changing I've been purchasing my power upfront. I like knowing there are no surprise bills coming up but I can go into credit if I need to. I can also wait for especially good deals and buy energy in bulk. Powershop's phone app is easy to use, shows how much advanced and used energy I have purchased and provides detailed information about my daily power usage at the touch of a button.
Great product, great price and great for the environment!
"A friend of mine told me about Powershop. I switched to Powershop because it saves me money and gives me more clarity around my power usage. I love being able to check daily usage on my Power up app. I don't have to wait 3 months to find out and get a shock at the final cost."
"We use electricity every day and night, and the environmental cost of our energy use is something we had to consider. Buying our electricity from Powershop is a straightforward way of minimising our own environmental impact."
Simon can save around $270 per annum inc. GST using the Online Saver discount with Powershop.
The concept for the Better Power campaign came from GetUp members, who told us they wanted fresh ways they could use their power as consumers to move to a cleaner electricity company and drive change in the energy market.
We select companies that have strong environmental and consumer-friendly credentials – ones that embrace renewable energy, are affordable for everyday Australians and have a commitment to advancing Australia's clean energy industry rather than relying on coal and other fossil fuels for their power generation.
Our key partner in New South Wales, Victoria and South East Queensland is Powershop – Australia's only certified carbon neutral energy retailer, and one which is backed by a 100% renewable energy generator.
We also work with other partners in the non-profit sector like Lock the Gate and Our Land, Our Water, Our Future to help support their important work protecting our communities, land and water from the damaging effects of coal seam gas mining.
Australia's energy sector is dominated by big, polluting companies that have a bad track record when it comes to acting in the interests of consumers. The energy industry is the biggest contributor to carbon emissions in the country, making it critical to address the sector if we are serious about combating pollution from outdated, polluting technology.
Around 70% of Victorians, 95% of Queenslanders and 90% of people in NSW get their household energy through one of only three companies – AGL, Origin Energy, or EnergyAustralia. These three companies are among the worst polluters in the country, with all three owning massive coal-fired power stations and investing in or supporting coal seam gas (CSG). Not only that, but each has been fined significant amounts of money for misleading consumers or for using predatory marketing techniques on their customers. Yikes!
Household electricity is the core business of these companies, and every person who switches to a Better Power company sends an important message that everyday Australians aren't going to stay with companies that thrive on outdated, polluting fossil fuels at the expense of our natural environment.

Powershop is backed by Meridian Energy, Australasia's largest 100% renewable energy generator. It is a modern power company that's designed to empower its customers with online tools and apps and save them money in the process.
Meridian is a multi-billion dollar company listed on the ASX and NZX. It owns and operates nine wind farms and seven hydro stations across Australia and New Zealand. It is 51% owned by the New Zealand government. Meridian owns and operates two wind farms in Australia, including the 64-turbine Mt Mercer wind farm just outside of Ballarat and the Mt Millar wind farm in South Australia. In combination, these wind farms generate enough electricity to power more than 100,000 households a year.
Powershop is Meridian's online energy retailer and the first power company in the Australian market to allow households and small businesses to see how much power they are using, what it costs before they pay for it, and to pay for it how and when they want to. It already has over 78,000 customers across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
Powershop impressed GetUp with its environmental credentials and its commitment to a sustainable, clean energy sector. It is Australia's only carbon neutral retailer, offsetting all the emissions its customers may produce via their electricity consumption. Not only that, it's owned by a 100% renewable energy generator with a commitment to only ever invest in renewables like wind and hydro, and never in dirty and polluting fossil fuels like coal and coal seam gas.
In fact, Powershop and Meridian feed more renewable energy into the grid than the total amount of electricity their retail customers use, meaning together they make a carbon and renewable positive contribution to Australian market. Because of its investments and its commitment to renewable energy, Powershop was twice ranked greenest electricity retailer in Australia by Greenpeace (Green Electricity Guide 2014 & 2015).
Powershop also has a strong focus on customer service and consumer issues, and has been ranked among the cheapest in Victoria by the government's Essential Services Commission and the St Vincent de Paul Society's Tariff Tracker, with highly competitive rates across the markets they operate in.
